# Organisational matter ID or numbers

Matter numbers are an optional custom attribute that can be enabled by an Organisation Administrator. Once enabled, a matter number field appears on all matters and is required when creating a new matter.

## **Enabling matter numbers (Organisation Administrators only)**

1. Click your name in the top right corner and select **Organisation Admin**.
2. Select **Settings** from the left-hand menu.
3. Click the **Matter Attributes** tab.
4. Check the box for **Enable custom matter attributes**.
5. Enter an attribute name in the **Name** field (e.g. "Matter Number" or "Matter Reference").

Once enabled, a matter number column will appear in the Matters dashboard and will be required when creating a new matter.

## **Adding a matter number to a new matter**

When creating a new matter, enter the matter number in the **Matter Number** field.

## **Editing a matter number on an existing matter**

1. Open the matter and go to the **Setup** tab.
2. Select **Settings** from the left-hand panel.
3. Enter or update the matter number in the **Matter Number** field.
