# Are there limits on file or folder name lengths?

[Windows](http://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/fileio/maximum-file-path-limitation) does **not** support file or folder paths longer than **260 characters** by default.

To ensure compatibility and reliable performance across all user environments, Legal Ready recommends adhering to the [default Windows path length limits](http://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/fileio/maximum-file-path-limitation).

### What counts toward the 260 characters?

Everything in the path counts — including the drive (like `C:`), all folder names, and the file name.

For example:

`C:UsersJaneDocumentsMattersSmithCourtBookVolume1Submissions...`

If that full path is longer than 260 characters, it may cause problems.

### Recommendations

- Keep folder and file names short
- Avoid too many nested folders
- If needed, move the file to a shorter path before uploading to eBrief Ready
