Are there limits on file or folder name lengths?

Windows does not support file or folder paths longer than 260 characters by default.

To ensure compatibility and reliable performance across all user environments, Legal Ready recommends adhering to the default Windows path length limits.

What counts toward the 260 characters? #

Everything in the path counts — including the drive (like C:\), all folder names, and the file name.

For example:

C:\Users\Jane\Documents\Matters\Smith\CourtBook\Volume1\Submissions...

If that full path is longer than 260 characters, it may cause problems.

Recommendations #

  • Keep folder and file names short
  • Avoid too many nested folders
  • If needed, move the file to a shorter path before uploading to eBrief Ready
